Edge Prepping 101

Why do tools need to be Edge Prepped?

ALL cutting tools have micro-grind lines on their leading cutting edges which cause premature tool failures. The micro-grind lines come from the grit size in the grinding wheels used in manufacturing cutting tools. Each grind line is the beginning of a fracture point which develops into a chip and thus a premature tool dulling and premature tool failure. When the leading cutting edge is uniformly smoothed the fracture points are eliminated and the tool will have greater tool life and in most cases allow greater feed rates which converts into a lower cost per hole per tool or a lower cost per the cubic inches of material removed per tool.

We use a Consistent Standard Tool Edge Prep Technology developed by Conicity Technologies, http://www.conicity.com/ a Weiler Corporation Company. Quinco Tool Products Company with these machines provided a uniformly edge preps based on a tools leading cutting edge specific to the material being cut by the customers carbide, cobalt high speed or HSS cutting tools.

Quinco Tool is reaching out to Distributors and Cutting Tool Manufacturers with this Edge Prep Technology. Our Michigan Edge Prep Center is fashioned after the typical coating company (like Balzer) that coats end-users, distributors and cutting tool manufacturers cutting tools.

In addition, Quinco’s Standard Offering of all ALL High Performance* Carbide 1/4” to 1” Flute Diameter End Mills will be sold Edge Pepped. Customers will notice a green label saying Edge Prepped – Honed on the cutting tool package.

Standard Pricing for End-Users, Distributors and Manufacturers is available upon request. 100% of ALL High Performance Carbide Regular length tools listed on the next to pages are sold with the Quinco Edge Prep on the end mill. When an end mill is purchased with a coating we edge Prep OVER the Coating. You will see a very small witness silver line on the leading cutting edge.

Edge Prep Tool Test Results

Customer 1:

A mid-west manufacturer using a high performance carbibe coated 4-Flute 3/4” End Mill cutting stainless steel parts. The manufacturers normall completed parts before Edge Prepreation was 12-parts with the End Mill. We then Edge Prepped the tools and increased there finished product per tool to 19 parts. We also in another similar test added coolant slots ground down the outside of the shank to deliver coolant into the sweep of the tool to cool the tool and flush the chips. The manufacturer was able increase productivity from 24-parts to 48 due to both Edge Prepreation and the coolant slots.

The operators comment was, “The Edge Prepped End Mills ran quieter than the ones Without the Edge Prep”. The1st new end mills cost the end-user over $110 each. A $4. Edge Prep generated the following results when adding a Ferrous Edge Prep to each of the 3-different tests. This in the end was quite a savings to the customer

Test 1 3/4” (NEW TOOLS EDGE PREPPED)

12 Parts Increased to 19

Test 2 3/4” (SAME TOOLS with Coolant Ground Slots)

24 Parts Increased to 48

Customer 2:

A boat manufacturer uses a Straight Flute 1/4” Carbide Router in hand routing out the holes needed in each boat. The operator uses 8+ tools per boat and has to take parts of his uniform off the change out each tool. With the uniform edge prep the operator completed the whole boat with 1 Straight Flute 1/4” Carbide Router with some work on the 2nd boat. It is estimated that millions of this type router are used in various industries.
